Pitfalls In Making A Restaurant Video

Restaurant videos are a great way to plug your eatery. Not only do they go on your web site, but they can also be displayed on index sites which vie for high search engine placement, and which invite restaurants to submit their videos. The videos can also be submitted to You Tube, and if popular it might be picked up by Google, and placed on the results page.

A display of the delectable cuisine your restaurant offers can effectively attract customers who wish to try the mouth watering dishes. However, people making restaurant videos must pay attention to certain principles to be sure their video will have the effect they want to acheive.

In the desire to tell everything important about the restaurant, in a short amount of time, producers must be careful not to hide the food from the public. One example of a video that fell into this pitfall is the Villa Barola video at: http://www.foodreference.com/frvideos/html/local-rest-001.html

The video is made with good quality graphics and very high quality narration and text, that would be the envy of any restaurant owner. But in the desire to tell it all, the producers have created text and narration and captions that crowd out the attractive food.

The narration begins with the sentence, “”You see the freshness at Villa Barolo European Style Raw Bar” But unfortunately, we don’t see it, because even as the narrator speaks, we are distracted by the word “freshness,” displayed vertically to the left in big text, and horizontally on the right in smaller text.” Next the narrator tells us we can “Experience the service with fish expertly prepared tableside.” We see the table and the waiter, but at that moment, the caption “Bronzino, Orratta, etc.” flashes on the top of the screen. Everything is on and off in several seconds and we miss the fish.

Then we are told, “You will taste the difference.” The video starts to pan a table which appears to be loaded with great tasting food. But as it does so, the graphic “Great Food” in large fonts is displayed to the left. The graphic distracts us once more and interferes with our personal examination of the food.

Then we are told the restaurant has hired a legendary Chef, at the same moment that a caption is saying “Same culinary staff for 15 years.” The contrast is so great, that we can’t concentrate effectively on the text and narration.

The video closes with three more scenes that all present great concepts which we can hear about, read about, but can’t see because we are so distracted by multimedia which buries the images.

The video then moves onto the lobby and bar “you will want to linger in.” While the producers clearly appreciate the value of lingering in a nice atmosphere, the video fails to let us linger in the ambience of the bar area as the nice sweep view is broken up by the caption, Weekly Entertainment.” The video closes with the nice slogan “Villa Borano is more than just food.” That’s a nice thought, however judging from the video, it was too much more, and not enough food! .

When you go to make your restaurant video, Once you have found a professional company that specializes in restaurant and other corporate video, remember to let the food take center stage!
