The Meaning And Significance Of Having Christmas Wreaths.
When coming up with Christmas decorations, Christmas wreaths are usually included in the all important list, next to the Christmas tree and presents. For the longest time, the wreath has been one of the most enduring decorations come Christmas time. However, have you ever thought about how it came about and its significance or meaning?
Back in the day, wreaths were generally regarded as a symbol that divine favor has been bestowed in an individual. It signified that the gods were giving you favor. The circle represented eternity because of its never ending repetition. The Romans regarded the wreath from Apollo as a sign of eternal love. On the other hand, the Druids believed that the wreath was a proclamation of human’s surpassing the normal timelines. As time passed, migrations happened and cultures mixed. Because of this, pagan and Christian custom intertwined and has come to provide the meaning of the wreath as we know today.
Let’s fast forward to modern times. Christianity kept spreading and thus the meaning of Christmas wreaths that we know now, changed. The meaning represented by the circle remained; however, it came to mean the unending love of Christ and Jesus. Other things that became representative of the blood of Christ were the holly berries and the scarlet ribbon that were associated with wreaths. On the other hand, as a whole, Christmas wreaths are thought to symbolize the crown of thorns that Jesus had to wear during his crucifixion.
Knowing about the history of Christmas wreaths is important, however, it is equally necessary to know how to make one if you intend to use them as decorations to further spruce up your home for the coming holidays. You don’t even have to buy a pre-made wreath; you can simply create your own to make it more personal. All you need would be a wreath ring, florist wire and then some vegetation to use as decoration.
The first two items you can buy at a local florist shop. They are cheap and will definitely not be a hassle. Then you can just take a walk and look for attractive vegetation. Conifers make an interesting base. Ivy’s, holly or other shrubs will also make an interesting wreath. If you want a little bit of color, try adding berries. Other interesting things to add would be seedpods, poppies, teasels or pine cones.
All you need to do once you have everything ready is take an appropriate length of the wire and tie it at the bottom of the foliage. Then, you can use the wire to wrap the foliage around the wreath ring. You just have to repeat this until its secure enough as a base since initially the leaves might be a bit unstable. Afterwards, all that is left for you to do is attach the vegetation and arrange them in a way that will be pleasing to the eye. The more interesting things you add, the more appealing your wreath will become.
After you’re done, then your Christmas wreaths should be ready for public viewing. Hang them at the front of your door and have them welcome every visitor that comes in.
