The Programmers Still Write They Code With A Text Editor?

Programmers “stars” of Microsoft prefer the old ways to write their codes. These superstars will leave nothing to the world their text editor.

Don Box, for example, who now works on declarative programming, humorously admits it would be “ready to kill” if it prevented him from working with this tool.

He understands that the new generation of programmers want graphical tools. He said however he did not grow up with them and that these habits are so different. He goes further: if programmers do not know how they work with a publisher, then the profession would be in danger.

Jeffrey Snover goes further. Much further.
Jeffrey Snover is the creator of PowerShell, “a shell and scripting language for system administration, developed. NET Framework, which allows the computer to control and automate the administration of Windows and applications” .

For him, the graphical programming environments are useless. Or more accurately, they become useless when we most needed. “When you have 5 tips to manage the graphical environment working,” he admits in an interview at the PDC, “but when you have 500, you keep more zoom then de-zoom. Do not know more what you do. To me, these are smokescreens “.

Yet Microsoft is heavily involved in the VPL (Visual Programming Language) including MVPL. Never mind: the graphic language are not acclaimed in-house by these super-stars like ButlerW. Lampson.

W. Butler Lampson is the winner of the Association for Computing Machinery’s AM Turing Award in 1992 and co-author of 9 programming languages.

For him, if the graphical environments can learn more quickly, more importantly, they learn “to lie” (sic): “no one can ever tell you that means a UML diagram!” Laughs he .

And all predict a resurgence of the text editor using the good old law graduate fashion which states that what is unfashionable today will be the trend tomorrow.

And you? :

Do you think that visual programming environments are a bad thing?
For you, is that if one programmer is known to develop with a text editor?

Personally I hate most of these tools and they are generally a source of problem perf and maintainability Ex: Dreamwaver, dung, the worst of humanity from that of a mammoth that appears it was 500 tons, the record is acceptable but the source code is worse than anything and it is ultimately dependent on the graphics editor for when you want to go see the code (which happens all the time if we make a special application) it has buttons.

These tools is the big thing for Microsoft conference: “Look I made an application in 5 drag n drop, techno genial no?” bin and not the facts.

Generally a developer should always know what is happening in its application, the lowest level possible, a developer who knows nothing of the assembly will have a hard time understanding the concept in object-handler and will always return objects that are setting an example.
